In fact, in the historic center of Naples there is a legend that has been handed down for centuries: that of the skull with ears. In the hypogeum of the church there is a rare example of a skull with mummified cartilages. The faithful used to address their prayers to the relic, in the hope that, hearing them, they could send them to the right ones in the afterlife.
At the moment, the only certain data is that relating to its origins: according to scholars, the skull kept inside the hypogeum of the church of Santa Luciella ai Librai in Naples dates back to the seventeenth century. The legend of the skull is linked to the cult of pezzentelle souls, i.e. those unknown, anonymous, abandoned souls without a proper burial, whose skeletons were forgotten in mass graves. Through the adoption of a skull, the faithful could alleviate the pain of the beggar soul, receiving graces in return.
